The in the box rich text control has a number of distinct problems. Most of the 3rd party controls are built on top of it and share those issues.
Examples of the same....
1. The built in control has a bunch of issues around toggling states, notably italic.
2. There's some implicit eating of events for specific character entries. (Ctrl L/R/P, for example)
3. There's at best so-so support for embedded links, etc. in the rich text. (No navigated event, hard to post a link from code/not markup/or format)
4. All of the implementions I've seen embrace the OneNote UWP app and the radial menu. While it's nice and pretty,it's not fast to use and not "I'm sitting a desk, stop it already" mode. None of the implementations I've seen are grade A for doing rich text editing with a mouse/keyboard-first mindset.

Thanks for the idea. I agree with all your statements. I think some of those are limits of the platform, but we will see what we can do.
